Canine Brucellosis: Brucella canis

چکیده

Canine brucellosis, caused by Brucella canis, is an important cause of reproductive failure, particularly in kennels. This organism causes abortions, stillbirths, epididymitis, orchitis and sperm abnormalities in dogs. Although dogs that have been spayed or neutered do not have reproductive signs, they occasionally develop other conditions such as ocular disease and discospondylitis. B. canis can persist in an animal even after antibiotic treatment. In kennels, infected dogs are often euthanized to prevent them from infecting other dogs or people. Canine brucellosis is sometimes difficult to diagnose with the currently available tests. Although B. canis is zoonotic, its importance as a cause of human illness is still unclear. Few cases have been reported in people, and most of these infections have been mild. However, human infections with B. canis may be underdiagnosed. The symptoms of this disease are nonspecific, diagnostic suspicion is low among physicians, and bacterial culture is the only commonly available test for diagnosis in people.

A rapid agglutination assay for canine brucellosis using antigen coated beads.

Brucella canis is the causative agent of canine brucellosis and facultative intracellular pathogen. The diagnosis of canine brucellosis is based on bacteriological examination and serological methods including agglutination and gel diffusion tests. In this study, crude antigens were extracted from B. canis using hot saline, coated on to latex beads and their usefulness in the serological diagno...

Canine Brucellosis Caused by Brucella Canis

Etiology and Epidemiology Canine brucellosis is caused by Brucella canis (B. canis), a rough, small, gram-negative, intracellular bacterium. Other Brucella species, i.e., B. abortus, B. suis, have occasionally caused canine infections but they are not discussed here. The canine brucella was first recognized in 1966 as a cause of abortions and reproductive failures and it has since been recogniz...

Multiple-locus variable number of tandem repeat analysis assay as a tool for the epidemiological study of Brucella canis in Korea

* Correspondence: [email protected] Brucella canis is an etiological agent of canine brucellosis, a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted to humans. B. canis is associated with dogs, which are its natural host. In some cases, dogs can also be infected with other Brucella species such as B. abortus, B. melitensis, and B. suis; however, B. canis is the primary etiological agent responsible for can...

Microplate Agglutination Test for Canine Brucellosis Using Recombinant Antigen-Coated Beads

Brucella canis, a facultative intracellular pathogen, is the causative agent of canine brucellosis. The diagnosis of canine brucellosis is based on bacteriological examination and serological methods, including agglutination and gel diffusion tests. In this study, four recombinant antigens, heat shock protein 60, rhizopine-binding protein, Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase, and hypothetical protein (A...

Human Infection with M- Strain of Brucella canis

The less mucoid strain of Brucella canis or M- strain is used for the serologic diagnosis of canine brucellosis. While this strain is avirulent in dogs, we report the case of clinical brucellosis that developed in a laboratory worker a few days after handling live M- cells for antigen production.
